Hoops & Gear

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I could hula hoop has a child.  Why can’t I do it now?”  The answer is simple:  you need to start off with a hoop that’s the right size for you.  And in this case, bigger is better.  The small, plastic hoops that you might find in a toy store are not built for adult bodies.  When shopping for a hoop, it’s kind of like shopping for a bicycle.  You wouldn’t look for a new bike in the tricycle section, right?

At Hoola Monsters, we believe in Monster-sized hoops for beginners… meaning larger in diameter and a bit heavier than the plastic kids’ toys. We also wrap our hoops with friction tape, so the hoop with actually stick to your body.  As a result, people who have never been able to hoop are now experiencing instant sucess!

We take great pride in our hand-made hoops, and with proper care, your Monster HoopTM will last for years to come.

Q&A

Q: Where can I purchase a hoop locally?
A: Visit us at the Saturday Morning Market (Our 2011 Fall dates are Oct 8, Oct 22, Dec 10 and Dec 17) .  The Market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located at the Progress Energy Lot - 1st Ave S and 1st Street in St. Pete.

Q: How do I know what size is right for me?
A: Generally speaking, hoop sizing is based on height and body type.  To find the diameter that's right for you, simply measure from the ground up (to your belly button for slender individuals and closer to the rib cage for full-figured adults).

Q:  Can I choose the design I want?  What about favorite colors?
A:  Absolutely!  Custom orders may be placed by emailing abby@hoolamonsters.com.   You may choose your favorite colors, pick a unique design, order special sizes, and even personalize a hoop with your name on it!  Small, light hoops are recommended for advanced hoopers and children, while extra large hoops can be made for very tall or full-figured individuals.  Please contact us for a price quote.

Q: Are your hoops weighted?
A: Yes and no.  We do not put water, sand or beads in our hoops.  Monster HoopsTM are constructed using industrial strength materials, which makes them heavier than the standard plastic variety.  Instead of internally weighing our hoops, we aim to evenly dispurse the weight on the outside of the hoop by adding more grip tape.  Reason being, when the hoop is weighted internally, it affects the flow of the rotation.  In our classes, we stress the importance of hooping in both directions.  Smooth directional changes are challenging with internally weighted hoops.  On average, a standard Monster HoopTM weighs between 1.5 and 2 lbs.
